We shared 5 common ways chickens show their love a couple weeks ago, and we’re back this week with even more! If you’re looking to better understand how your flock shows their appreciation for you, keep reading. Here are some special ways chickens let you know you matter to them.

1. Brings You Gifts

There’s no specific item that says “I love you,” but that won’t stop your flock from trying to find the right one! Roosters and hens can often take gifts to their keepers as a sign of love and appreciation. You can probably imagine what they can fit in those tiny beaks of theirs, so don’t take any gift for granted. If one of your flock members comes to you with any offering, accept it with pride!

2. Lays An Egg In Your Lap

Chickens only lay eggs in places where they feel safe. If your lap is a laying spot for one or some of your chickens, then you should feel very loved! This is a sign that they trust you enough to keep their freshly laid eggs safe, and that is a pretty high honor coming from a chicken. As creatures of habit, your lap may even become a common place for your chickens to lay their eggs! So keeping a towel and a bucket on your person at all times might not be such a bad idea…

3. Asks For Pets

One sure sign of a chicken expressing love to you is if it actually comes to you for physical contact. Many chickens don’t like to be touched, let alone petted. But if you have a feathered friend who approaches you and squats, it may be asking for just that! Squatting is a sign of submission, which acts as a way for your chicken to let its guard down long enough for you to get some pets in there. How lucky are you!

4. Responds When You Call Their Name

Many flock keepers choose unique names for each of their chickens. There’s a sense of accomplishment that can fill your body when you assign a name to a loved one and it sticks! When you call a chicken’s name and they respond to it, take it as a sign of respect. Understanding their name means they fit a little piece of you into not only their identity, but their daily routine! Props to you for having responsive chickens!

A chicken’s love is unlike any other, and these special acts only amplify what you know is already there. You won’t ever be lacking love when you can see the sure signs that your flock is saying “I love you.” Pay attention to your flock’s language of love and we guarantee it will pay off big time!
